The Application Process: Mistakes To Avoid

Now that you're a walking fount of knowledge regarding financing your education, it's time to begin. Step one: Complete the free application for financial aid (FAFSA), which allows all institutions to which you apply to evaluate your needs. Step two: Visit the financial aid office-in person or on the Internet-of schools that interest you. Since each school has different procedures, it's important to contact each one directly. They can supply you with any additional application forms.

Most importantly, avoid making common mistakes. Do not:

  • Assume you're ineligible for aid. If you need assistance, apply.
  • Assume there's not enough aid available. While it's harder to get grant money than loans, there are funds available for everyone. Lewis believes that candidates have "a very good chance of qualifying for some type of aid."
  • Miss the filing deadlines. According to Crupper, the biggest mistake students make is not filing on time.
  • Forget to sign the application. You've put a lot of effort into filling out the apps. Read them carefully before submission and don't forget to sign on the dotted line.
