NurseVillage is proud to honor our nurses during National Nurses Week! One week out of the entire year we get to do what we should be doing all along – recognizing and thanking our nurses. Annually, National Nurses Week begins on May 6, marked as RN Recognition Day, and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession. During this week the nation gets to acknowledge the tireless efforts of America's 2.7 million registered nurses.
A Long Road to Recognition Nurses have always worked hard. You work days, nights, weekends, even holidays, and you do it all for the benefit of others. But despite all this, it’s amazing how difficult it was to actually get a week of recognition established. The history of National Nurses Week is a long and interesting one, dating back to the year 1953 when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a “Nurse Day”. 29 years later, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation on March 25, proclaiming “National Recognition Day for Nurses” to be May 6, 1982. It would take another 11 years until an entire week would be dedicated to the quality work nurses provide seven days a week, 365 days a year. At some point in our lives, a nurse will touch almost all of us in some special way. Whether you lift our spirits with a simple smile or comfort us at a time when we need it most, you will make a difference in our future. Without nurses the American healthcare system could not exist, and neither could NurseVillage. The stories we tell are inspired by the amazing job you do every day. We are always looking for new ways to improve our website and ultimately make your life a little better… a little easier… a little more about you. NurseVillage wants you to know that we salute you not only during this special week, but every day of the year. We hope that during National Nurses Week everyone takes a little extra time to thank a nurse. |
