The Sisters of Bon Secours came to the United States from Paris in 1881 and began their mission of caring for the sick and dying in Baltimore homes. In 1919, Bon Secours Hospital in Baltimore was established as the first Bon Secours Hospital in the United States. Today, Bon Secours Baltimore Health System (BSBHS) is an integrated health system in a disadvantaged, urban environment. BSBHS includes two acute care hospitals, Bon Secours Hospital and Liberty Medical Center, with 490 licensed beds, a 32-bed skilled nursing sub-acute unit, substance treatment centers, renal dialysis centers, primary care centers, elderly housing complexes, Medicare certified Home Health agency and Hospice program, community outreach programs, neighborhood revitalization efforts, closed-model physician-hospital organization and a foundation. BSBHS also includes the Urban Medical Institute (UMI), the nation’s first comprehensive, community-based medical institute dedicated to improving the health status in an urban community, and the Community Institute for Behavioral Services (CIBS), a state licensed OMHC and the lead agency for mental health services in West Baltimore. BSBHS is a part of a national health system, Bon Secours Health System, Inc., headquartered in Marriotsville, MD. The Congregation of the Sisters of Bon Secours whose mission and values are the essence of all our efforts sponsors the entire system. The mission of BSBHS is to help people to wholeness, especially the poor and dying, by striving to continually improve the quality of healthcare services to the communities of West Baltimore. |
