Greater Baltimore Medical Center 6701 North Charles StreetBaltimore, Maryland 21204 443-849-2000
In October 1965, Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) opened in Towson, Maryland. Founded in the late 19th century, GBMC was created by two prestigious Baltimore hospitals that sought to serve the growing population north of the city. These hospitals came together to build an exceptional and expansive community hospital. The Hospital for the Women of Maryland in Baltimore City had a novel specialization. While previously most women were cared for in their homes, it opened in 1882 in Bolton Hill as only the second women's hospital in the country. The Presbyterian Eye, Ear and Throat Charity Hospital had nearly 100 years of excellence in ophthalmology and otolaryngology. The hospital originated as a clinic in a civil war surgeon's East Baltimore carriage house in the 1887. It later moved to a larger capacity building on East Baltimore Street. Today GBMC is a licensed 302-bed healthcare facility with nearly 1 million square feet of medical complex. Facts & Figures on GBMC
