Kernan Hospital began more than 100 years ago as a haven for children with orthopaedic deficits. While maintaining an atmosphere of country peace, it has evolved to offer innovative, interdisciplinary orthopaedic and rehabilitation services for children and adults.

Located on the border of Baltimore City and Baltimore County near Woodlawn, the 85-acre wooded site includes the original Radnor Mansion that Mr. Kernan purchased as the first hospital on the campus in 1911.

The hospital provides a range of inpatient and outpatient programs for patients with orthopaedic and neurologic conditions. The University of Maryland Medical System has owned Kernan since 1986. This allows Kernan patients to access the continuity of care and extensive resources that characterize a university teaching hospital.

Kernan Hospital, a committed provider of orthopaedic surgery, has dedicated operating room teams thoroughly trained on orthopaedic procedures. The staff consists of a support team of orthopaedic physician assistants and dedicated nurses in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit and on the Medical/Surgical Unit, providing the highest quality of care in the acute hospital setting.

In 1989, the state of Maryland selected Kernan to be one of five centers throughout Maryland with licensed rehabilitation beds, and in 1996 Montebello Rehabilitation Hospital merged with Kernan. Kernan Hospital is JCAHO and CARF accredited with specialty accreditation in Brain Injury (BI), Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), and Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation Program (CIIRP).

Kernan is dedicated to reaching out to the community and providing personalized care to patients. Kernan continues to be committed to excellence in the areas of patient care and medical education through training programs provided for orthopaedic residents and therapy students. Kernan has kept pace with the changing environment in healthcare by blending a multidisciplinary staff of specialist to meet a variety of patient needs. Kernan Hospital is the designated orthopaedic hospital of the University of Maryland Medical System.
