Union Memorial Hospital 201 East University ParkwayBaltimore, Maryland 21218 410-554-2000
Union Memorial Hospital is a full-service, comprehensive healthcare facility that designs services to meet the special needs of a diverse population. Their hospital services are rooted in a long history of medical and nursing excellence, and their commitment to serving the community has been evident from the beginning. The seven women who established the Union Protestant Infirmary (UPI), as it was first called, wanted a place where “the sick, the poor and the infirm” could receive quality care. When UPI opened in 1854, it accommodated about 20 patients in small quarters at Baltimore and Stricker streets, near Union Square. Steady growth kept UPI moving, first to Mosher and Division streets, then to 33rd and Calvert streets. The hospital was changing philosophically as well, including the changing of their name to Union Memorial Hospital. This name change reflected “a better interpretation of their mission” and “progressive humanitarian attitudes.” Union Memorial has gradually evolved from a 20-bed to a 350-bed hospital with more than 2,250 employees. Union Memorial is a member of MedStar Health, a community-based healthcare system comprised of 30 integrated businesses, including seven hospitals in the Baltimore/Washington area. In addition to Union Memorial Hospital, the hospitals are Franklin Square Hospital Center, Good Samaritan Hospital, and Harbor Hospital Center in Baltimore, and the National Rehabilitation Hospital and Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. Georgetown University Hospital joined the system in July 2000, adding to the presence in the D.C. area. MedStar Health's diversified health-related services include primary care, urgent care, subacute care, adult medical day care, home health and hospice care, nursing homes, assisted living, senior housing, pharmaceutical care, home infusion services, durable medical equipment, occupational health services and rehabilitation centers. In addition, MedStar Health maintains a comprehensive physician network of more than 1,000 physicians. Union Memorial Hospital has served the people of its community for nearly 150 years, and it will continue to grow. As long as there are new challenges in medicine, Union Memorial will find new ways to meet them with the same attention to compassionate, quality care. |
