Castle Island The 22-acre Castle Island, one of Boston's best free attractions, draws a diverse crowd. Its beach is a hit with runners, bicyclists, sunbathers, and fishing enthusiasts. Kids love to tackle the renovated jungle gym and adults enjoy the spectacular view of downtown Boston. History buffs flock to this urban park's Fort Independence, purportedly the oldest continuously used military fortification in the United States. The fort protected the harbor during early America's turbulent days. Connected by causeways to the mainland since the 1930s, Castle Island features a circular walkway that extends out over the water. During the summer months there are fort tours, but interpretive signs allow for self-guided tours all year. Location Hours of operation Cost Disabled access Contact information Special information
