Charles Hayden Planetarium

Photo Credit: Museum of Science, Boston
Pick one of the 240 ergonomically designed seats and look up. The Charles Hayden Planetarium at Boston's Museum of Science can transport you and teach you.

Recreating the visible universe inside a 60-foot dome, the Hayden employs a star projector capable of simulating 9,000 stars and 29 constellations. But on Friday nights, weather permitting, stargazers can witness the real thing, thanks to the rooftop Gilliland Observatory. Two observatory telescopes transmit live pictures into the planetarium theater.

Stars of the music variety also come out at the Hayden: Evening laser shows combine laser technology with the music of such groups as Pink Floyd, the Beatles, and Rush. And traveling shows like "Stars of the Pharaohs" use the planetarium's 108 special-effects projectors, five large-format video projectors, 72 slide projectors, and three laser disc players.

Location
The planetarium is part of Boston's Museum of Science, located where the O'Brien Highway (Route 28) crosses the Charles River. It is situated 200 yards from the MBTA Science Park stop on the Lechmere Green Line.

Hours of operation
Times for the afternoon and evening shows vary.
