John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library And Museum

If you weren't old enough to remember where you were when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, the John F. Kennedy Library recreates Kennedy's world and the early 1960s for you. Period settings from the White House, 25 multimedia exhibits, and various special events breathe life into the days of "Camelot." And thanks to film, video, and sound recordings, visitors can hear about John F. Kennedy's career, challenges, and commitment in his own words.

Dedicated in 1979, the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library and Museum is one of 10 presidential libraries managed by the National Archives and Records Administration. This memorial to our 35th president sits on a 10-acre waterfront site on Columbia Point in the Dorchester section of Boston, where Kennedy's mother, Rose Fitzgerald, grew up.

The library includes 180,000 still photographs, 1,000 audio tapes, 70,000 volumes of printed material, and 6 million feet of film and videotape. A 110-foot-high glass pavilion houses a 26x45-foot American flag, as well as a replica of the prestigious Profile in Courage Award. Ongoing exhibitions showcase First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, John Glenn and the space race, and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy.

The library might seem an unlikely repository for Ernest Hemingway papers and mementos, but in 1980, Patrick Hemingway and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis dedicated the Hemingway Room in the newly opened library. The room includes the American novelist's antelope head from a 1933 safari, photos of three generations of Hemingways, a fireplace, large desks, and comfortable chairs.
