MIT Museum

A woman morphing into a tiger. A chair exploding and reassembling itself. What some would call magic, MIT Museum presents as innovation. Founded in 1971 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the museum explores the past, present, and future of science and technology.

Ongoing exhibit subjects in the main gallery include MIT legend Harold "Doc" Edgerton and how his electronic strobe brings the invisible world into focus; the witty and kinetic sculptures of Arthur Ganson; a selection of holograms from MIT Museum's collection, the world's largest; and the state of artificial intelligence, as explored by MIT's research labs. Visitors also can learn what an MIT education is like, use plasma globes to create electromagnetic auras, and go into brain battle via the man-versus-computer Metafield Maze puzzler.

With too much to fit under one roof, MIT Museum offers two ancillary galleries. The Compton Gallery highlights art and technology with traveling exhibits. The Hart Nautical Gallery focuses on ocean engineering and nautical history, illustrating the evolution of ship design over the past four centuries. The museum's shop sells puzzles, games, books, and objects of "technological whimsy."

Near Central Square in Cambridge, the museum's main gallery is located at 265 Massachusetts Avenue at the intersection with Front Street (Building N52).
