The Paul Revere House

Photo Credit: The Freedom Trail Foundation
As Boston's original noisy neighbor, silversmith Paul Revere left his indelible mark more on the movement for American independence than on silver. On the night of April 18, 1775, he rode from his small wooden home to Lexington, "alarming" each house along the way that British troops were coming.

That wooden home of his, built circa 1680, provided shelter for Revere, and his wife, five children, and mother. Today, the restored dwelling retains 90 percent of its original material, including large fireplaces and two upstairs rooms with Revere family furnishings. The home gives visitors a solid idea of domestic colonial life. While Revere House tours are self-guided, illustrated text panels and museum "interpreters" aid in enlightening guests.

Saturday afternoons from May to October, the house's Living History Programs may include a Paul Revere impersonator answering questions, artisans demonstrating colonial crafts, and musicians performing period music. A lecture series is offered each September at the historic home. During the holiday season, costumed interpreters instruct about 17th-century celebratory customs and offer colonial holiday refreshments.

Location
The Paul Revere House is located at 19 North Square in Boston's North End, between Richmond and Prince Streets. Driving to the Revere House is discouraged due to the narrow one-way streets and limited parking.

Taking public transportation (the MBTA line) is a better option. Take the Green Line to Government Center or Haymarket Station; the Blue Line to Government Center or Aquarium Station; or the Orange Line to State or Haymarket Station. On foot, follow the Freedom Trail and the red line on the sidewalks. The house is 10 minutes away from Faneuil Hall.

Hours of operation
From November 1 to April 14, hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. From mid-April to October 31, hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Open daily, the house is closed only on Mondays in January, February, and March, and for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
