In Nathaniel Hawthorne's 19th-century Gothic tale, The House of the Seven Gables, a Salem, Mass., house is the focal point for a curse, an execution for witchcraft, and 200 years of rivalry between two families. Today, visitors can tour the house that inspired Hawthorne to write this book.
Built in 1668, the House of the Seven Gables (also known as the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion) is one of the oldest surviving 17th-century wooden mansions in New England. Costumed interpreters greet visitors to the grounds, and once inside, visitors will discover a mysterious secret staircase.
Several other landmarks can be found at the House of the Seven Gables Historic Site. Behind the legendary house sits the home where Hawthorne was born, moved from its original setting in 1958 and now a tribute to the author. Also on the grounds are an 18th-century granite sea wall, two seaside gardens, and a teahouse and shop. A museum houses 2,000 artifacts, over 400 pieces of framed artwork, 500 photos, rare manuscripts, and more than 650 research volumes and rare books.
