Stone Zoo

As the sister zoo to Boston's Franklin Zoo, Stone Zoo really is like a little sister. At only 26 acres, the zoo is admittedly small, but this picturesque park has the distinction of being the nation's first Earth Park, a place for learning about conservation and the environment.

Stone Zoo hosts endangered species like the Mexican Gray Wolf, along with lynx, reindeer, arctic foxes, ring-tailed lemurs, snow leopards, snowy owls, llamas, river otters, tortoises, and flamingos. Settings are designed to resemble the animals' natural habitats. Youngsters will like the Touchable Barnyard, where they can pet goats and sheep. The Treasures of the Sierra Madre features such Southwestern wildlife as coyotes, jaguars, and two orphaned cougar cubs.

Picnickers can take advantage of the zoo's location on Spot Pond for a picturesque eating environment. Also nearby are nature trails and bridle paths, along with ice skating, fishing, and swimming opportunities.

Stone Zoo is located at 149 Pond Street in Stoneham, about 10 miles north of Boston.
