East Boston Dig deeply enough and you may hit the foundation of East Bostonfive islands connected and extended through 150 years of filling operations. And the improvements continue: More money has been invested into developing East Boston than any other Boston neighborhood. The close proximity of Logan Airport can be a plus (or a minus, if you consider the jets zooming overhead in the wee morning hours). Ever a neighborhood of immigrants, East Boston is populated in part by those from South America, Central America, Southeast Asia, Haiti, and Eastern Europe. Its eateries and shops reflect the ethnic mix of its population. Housing options are generous. Developers in the 1830s envisioned East Boston as a neighborhood of single-family residences. Today, it offers a mix of three-deckers, restored historic homes, single-family residences, and multi-family units. Rents remain fairly affordable but are slowly climbing as renovations raise property value.
