Characterized by an inner-city atmosphere, Mattapan is proud of its recent lack of racially motivated incidents and reduction in the crime rate. Police and undercover agents patrol Mattapan Square, the commercial center, to make shoppers feel more secure. And community efforts are aimed at beautification and prosperity.

This mostly residential neighborhood features single-family homes, two-family wood and brick units, and triple-deckers. Mattapan's diverse minority population includes African-American, Haitian and other Caribbean ethnicities, and a few Caucasian and Hispanic residents.
