South End Trendy, funky, upscale, artsy, diverseSouth End wears such adjectives equally well. This neighborhood owes its hipness to a 1980s yuppie influx and to its melting-pot demographicsartists and activists, students and professionals, families and singles, old and young, and all ethnic types. Music clubs, art galleries, and fashionable restaurants can be found alongside coffee shops and mom-and-pop grocery stores, especially on and near Tremont Street. Quaint parks are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood, while flowers and trees break through the sidewalks. Housing ranges from Victorian brick row houses to low-income apartments. South End has the distinction of having the country's largest concentration of Victorian homes, as well as being socially diverse. Boundaries for the South End include the Mass Turnpike, Fitzgerald Expressway, Melnea Cass Boulevard, and Huntington Avenue.
