The heart of art in the Durham area is the Duke University Museum of Art (DUMA),
located on Duke's East Campus. DUMA was established following the acquisition
in the late-1960s of the Brummer Collection of European Medieval and
Renaissance art. The facility has expanded since that time to include permanent
and temporary
exhibits from around the world.
In addition to the Brummer Collection, some of the outstanding
permanent collections include a pre-Columbian collection from Central and
South America, an African collection of 174 masks and ritual objects from
Liberia and Nigeria, American paintings by the Hudson River School artists,
a growing collection of European paintings from the Renaissance to the present,
and art from 19th- and 20th-century Russia. Additionally, there are many
temporary exhibits throughout the year.
