The North Carolina Central University Art Museum has distinguished itself by primarily focusing on African-American art. The museum's exhibits of 19th-century works include Robert Scott Duncanson's 1866 masterpiece, Cottage
Pass Opposite Ben Lomond. Also featured are works by other masters, such as Edward Mitchell Bannister and Henry Ossawa Tanner. The 20th-century collection includes artists whose most well-known works were created during the 1920s and 1930s, a period in art history known as the Harlem Renaissance. Late-20th-century artists whose work is featured at the museum include Juan Logan, Barkley Hendricks, Minnie Evans, Sam Gilliam, and Kerry James Marshall.
