Historic Stagville

As one of the largest estate holdings of the pre-Civil War South, the Bennehan-Cameron plantation, known as Stagville, once encompassed several thousand acres. Today, Historic Stagville is part of a 71-acre site, where you can get a glimpse of life in the early-1800s. Stagville's historic buildings include the Bennehan House, which was the main plantation house; the Great Barn; and Horton Grove, the slave quarters that housed a small fraction of the 900 slaves who toiled at Stagville.

In addition to touring the grounds at Historic Stagville, you can attend one of the public learning opportunities offered throughout the year, such as the Earlie E. Thorpe Lecture each November, and the special programs during Black History Month. Many workshops feature African-American studies and historic preservation. Of special interest are the artifacts found at Stagville, which evidence the formation of communities among the slaves and show, even as they were made to feel inferior, the remarkable development of their own culture.

Arguably the most interesting city in the country.
Naturally pleasant, technically prime.
