Research Triangle Park

Located in the southern part of Durham, Research Triangle Park (RTP) is named for its affiliation with three major universities: Duke University in Durham, University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Well known as the world's largest university-related research park, RTP's 7,000 acres are two miles wide and eight miles long. There are 136 companies located there, including Biogen, IBM, Eli Lilly, JDS Uniphase, Nortel Networks, and Lockheed Martin. They collectively employ an estimated 45,000 people.

For the most part, there are no residential areas in RTP, although there are several housing complexes near the park. The region boasts one of the highest concentrations of PhDs in the nation.
