California African American Museum
The 44,000-square-foot facility is one of only four state museums in California. The impressive complex, which also features the works of contemporary artists, is home to three galleries, a 99-seat theater, a research library, and an outdoor "Sculpture Court." Current collections include works by African-American artists in all genres, including singer Ella Fitzgerald, and sculptors Artis Lane and Charles Dickson. Also included are historical studies of people like Biddy Mason, a woman who walked across the country behind her master's wagon but ultimately became one of Los Angeles' wealthiest citizens during the gold rush. The museum offers lectures, workshops, guided tours, film festivals, and several educational programs, all for the purpose of enriching the appreciation of African-American history, art, and culture.
