UCLA Armand Hammer Museum

Armand Hammer was born in 1898, the son of a Russian immigrant and doctor. He made his first million running his father's pharmaceutical business, and eventually became the head of Occidental Petroleum, where he made many millions more. His philanthropic efforts included promoting cultural exchanges between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, and acquiring an extensive collection of art. In 1990, his art collection became the basis of the Armand Hammer Museum.

The 14,000-square-foot museum covers two floors and includes a courtyard, which is used for cultural performances. The permanent art collection consists primarily of traditional art, from the Renaissance to contemporary periods, with an emphasis on Impressionist and post-Impressionist works. Artists on display include Cassat, Monet, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Van Gogh. There also is a display of art produced by the 19th century French artist Honore Daumier and his contemporaries.

The upper level of the museum is home to the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts. It contains more than 35,000 works, including prints, drawings, photographs, and books by creative giants such as Oscar Wilde and Paul Cezanne. The museum also is known for its visiting exhibits, which continuously change and are known to be provocative.
