The Getty Center

Photo Credit: © John Stephens and J. Paul Getty Trust
Majestically situated atop 110 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains, the Getty Center is an architectural wonder that houses a magnificent art museum, a research institute, a library, and several restaurants. As might be expected, when an art museum bears the name of one of the richest men in America's history, everything about it is first class. Designed by award-winning architect Richard Meier, the building is made of cleft-cut, fossilized Italian travertine, and captures the goals of the Getty Trust-"permanence, solidity, simplicity, warmth and craftsmanship."

Eleven hundred fifty-five artists are represented at the Getty, including some of history’s greatest-Manet, Monet, Cezanne, Degas, Renoir, Seurat, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Don’t miss Van Gogh’s "Irises," which the Getty Trust bought at auction for $53.9 million. Major collections focus on Greek and Roman antiquities, and European paintings, drawings, sculpture, and decorative arts. The Getty also has an extensive collection of European and American photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The landscaping at the Getty is another work of art. The 134,000-square-foot Central Garden is home to more than 300 plants, and is diligently attended by four full-time gardeners. In addition, the Getty Center affords visitors panoramic views of L.A., from city landscapes to the Pacific Ocean.
