Mulholland Drive Before Mulholland Drive found fame in the offbeat David Lynch film bearing its name, it was renowned as a breathtaking scenic drive, and home to the rich and famous. This long and winding road affords views of the expensive residences of some of the entertainment industry's biggest names. You also can pull off at one of eight scenic overlooks and enjoy unequalled views of the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles, including the world-famous "Hollywood" sign. Located along Mulholland Drive is San Vicente Mountain Park, 10 acres of land for hiking and biking that offers still more fabulous views. During the Cold War (between 1956 and 1968), the park served as a Nike missile site, and soldiers were stationed there to protect the country from possible missile attack. These days, hikers and bikers can enjoy the 360-degree view of Los Angeles provided by the mountaintop tower. San Vicente Mountain Park is only one of many parks, overlooks, greenways, and gardens along Mulholland Drive. All are bound together under the management of the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy, whose job it is to preserve the area. You can find everything from hiking trails to outdoor classrooms to waterfalls. And if you come on the right day, you might even witness a crew shooting a movie, as the mountains are frequently used as film locations.
