Martin Luther King, Jr./Charles R. Drew Medical Center 12021 South Wilmington Ave. As the region's only Level I trauma center, Martin Luther King, Jr./Charles R. Drew Medical Center operates a paramedic base station and an emergency heliport. By necessity, the medical center offers outstanding trauma care due to the degree of drug-related violence and exemplary neonatal care due to the number of drug-addicted, expectant mothers. Ground on the hospital was broken in 1968, just six days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The groundbreaking launched a new era for the medically neglected residents of Watts and nearby neighborhoods. First opened in 1972, the King/Drew Medical Center is licensed for 537 beds,
461 for general acute care and 76 for psychiatric care. Its 3,500 employees
include 325 resident physicians, interns, and fellows in training. Clinical services
Martin Luther King, Jr./Charles R. Drew Medical Center is operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. |
