Miami Neighborhoods
Labels can draw misleading characterizations. Miami unofficially has been branded as “America’s Poorest Large City,” yet it contains one of America’s richest towns (Key Biscayne). Waves of Haitian and Latin American immigrants inflated the poverty rate (now around 29 percent), but most of the impoverished dwell in a few inner-city communities. And Miami’s nickname of “Little Cuba” doesn’t hint at the many other ethnicities residing here. While more than half the nation’s Cubans can be found among Miami–Dade County’s 2.3-million residents, under 60 percent of Miami’s population is of Hispanic origin. Between the extremes of poverty-level housing projects and million-dollar condos lies a more realistic portrait of Greater Miami. Bathed in year-round sunshine and close to beautiful beaches, distinctive neighborhoods and municipalities offer varying housing costs and degrees of suburbia. As for the diversity here, locals value it for how it enriches Miami–Dade County’s quality of life, from festivals and activities to music and cuisines. Greater Miami’s neighborhoods include: Central Miami
- Island Communities
- North Miami–Dade
- South Miami–Dade
