Bayley Seton Hospital 75 Vanderbilt Avenue It was founded in 1831 as the Seaman’s Retreat for the medical care of merchant seamen. In 1883, it was leased by the federal government and used for laboratory research for the U.S. Marine Hospital Service (later, the National Institutes of Health). The much-used building is now part of Bayley Seton Hospital, named for New York City’s first public health service officer and the foundress of the Sisters of Charity in America. The 198-bed Bayley Seton Hospital maintains a contract with the U.S. Department of Defense to provide healthcare to the area’s active military personnel and their dependents, and to retired military personnel. Services include ambulatory surgery, a diagnostic sleep laboratory, and a vision center, plus a broad range of primary and specialty outpatient programs. Clinical services
