Beth Israel Medical Center—Petrie Division One First Avenue (First Avenue at 16th Street) Between its Brooklyn (Kings Highway) and Manhattan (Singer and Petrie) divisions, Beth Israel Medical Center offers 1,368 beds and employs more than 2,000 physicians. This full-service, tertiary teaching hospital was founded on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1889. BIMC since has grown into the largest provider of inpatient care in New York State. BIMC is nationally recognized in several areas, including stroke care, orthopedic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and some obstetrics.
