Brooklyn Hospital Center

121 Dekalb Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11201

When a visitor to the home of Brooklyn’s then-mayor, Cyrus P. Vance, broke his leg and had nowhere to go for medical care, Mayor Vance was inspired. He gathered community support and in 1845 founded Brooklyn City Hospital, the 18th hospital established in the United States.

Today, the facility is known as Brooklyn Hospital Center. This 653-bed tertiary-care teaching hospital provides state-of-the-art acute care on two campuses—one near Lower Manhattan and one in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Brooklyn Hospital Center is staffed by 3,000 employees and a medical staff of 524 voluntary, 140 full-time, and 115 part-time physicians.
