Kings County Hospital Center 451 Clarkson Avenue With more than 700 beds, Kings County Hospital Center is one of the nation’s largest municipal hospitals and New York State’s largest Level I trauma center. The 16-square-block complex originated as a one-room infirmary in 1830. In 1955, Kings County was the site of the state’s first open-heart surgery. Its physicians invented the world’s first hemodialysis machine, conducted the first studies of HIV infection in women, and produced the first human images using magnetic resonance.
