A Norwegian Lutheran deaconess-nurse founded Lutheran Medical Center in 1883 to serve the local Scandinavian population. These days, Lutheran Medical Center has a much broader focus. The 476-bed hospital and Level I trauma center is part of Lutheran Healthcare, which includes several Family Health Centers as well as a 240-bed nursing home and extended-care facility.
