Maimonides Medical Center 4802 10th Avenue Although it was a small community hospital in 1911, Maimonides Medical Center has evolved into Brooklyn’s leading tertiary-care facility and the nation’s third-largest teaching hospital. Its international leadership in cardiac care was demonstrated in 1967 when it served as the site for the first human heart transplant in the U.S., performed by Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz. It also pioneered the development of the first commercial pacemaker. With 70 primary care and subspecialty programs, the 705-bed Maimonides Medical Center extends outside its walls through outpatient clinics, ambulatory care centers, community affiliations, and partnerships.
