NYU Downtown Hospital 170 William Street America’s first licensed female physician, Elizabeth Blackwell, figured prominently in the creation of NYU Downtown Hospital. In 1853, Dr. Blackwell founded the New York Infirmary; the infirmary merged in 1979 with the Beekman Downtown Hospital, established in 1905. NYU Downtown Hospital—the only hospital serving Lower Manhattan—is an acute-care, 300-bed teaching hospital. Inpatient and outpatient services are offered by the more than 500 attending physicians.
