NYU Downtown Hospital

America’s first licensed female physician, Elizabeth Blackwell, figured prominently in the creation of NYU Downtown Hospital. In 1853, Dr. Blackwell founded the New York Infirmary; the infirmary merged in 1979 with the Beekman Downtown Hospital, established in 1905.

NYU Downtown Hospital—the only hospital serving Lower Manhattan—is an acute-care, 300-bed teaching hospital. Inpatient and outpatient services are offered by the more than 500 attending physicians.
