St. Clare’s Hospital and Health Center 415 West 51st Street A nonprofit, Catholic healthcare provider, St. Clare’s Hospital and Health Center was created from the 1970 merging of St. Clare’s Hospital, built in 1934, and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. The resulting 120-bed hospital and Level II trauma center operates several Family Health Centers in the area. St. Clare’s Hospital and Health Center may be best known for its Spellman Center for HIV-Related Diseases, which features a 40-bed acute-care unit, a full-service clinic, and a 24-hour toll-free AIDS hotline. In the early, stigma-tinged years of the AIDS epidemic, St. Clare’s became the first hospital in New York State to open a specialized AIDS unit. Clinical services
