Formerly a swamp, the neighborhood of Gramercy Park has done a lot to elevate its station in life. Now resembling an old-fashioned London square or Boston’s Back Bay, it’s a sophisticated enclave in the heart of the city. It’s the home of the Poetry Society of America and the National Arts Club, which gives you some idea of the neighborhood’s sensibility. If you like it quiet, Gramercy Park is the place for you. Noise just isn’t tolerated here. If loud parties are your style, pack your bags and head for another neighborhood. And you can follow the same advice if you’re on a budget. Dwellings down by the East River are a little less expensive than the rest of Gramercy Park, but still aren’t known for their affordability. Gramercy Park’s elegant and expensive Victorian-style townhouses, brownstones, post-war high-rises, and stone row houses overlook a one-block-square park of the same name—an exclusive park that is locked to all but the residents of the surrounding buildings. The exclusion of the rest of the city from the park is nothing new; it’s been that way since the park opened in 1831. This important perk is part of the neighborhood’s appeal. Nannies can stroll safely with their charges, while animal lovers walk their dogs in peace. And once outside the confines of the neighborhood, residents also benefit from the close proximity to Midtown, Soho, Chinatown, and the East Village, all of which are within walking distance. This enhances the feeling that Gramercy Park is a village in the middle of a city, and makes it an even more special place to be. Healthcare facilities in Gramercy Park: Bellevue Hospital Center |
