Midtown

As its name suggests, Midtown is right the center of things. Not only does it have some of New York’s most prominent landmarks and tourist attractions, such as St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Museum of Modern Art, the United Nations, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and Rockefeller Center, it’s also a transportation hub. Grand Central Terminal is located here, along with the Roosevelt Island tram station. The area also hosts a number of embassies, multinational corporations, and upscale stores, whose presence creates a lot of hustle and bustle. But when business is done for the day, the neighborhood reverts to the residents and is quiet.

Midtown wasn’t always considered a desirable residential neighborhood, but the extensive development that has occurred since World War II has increased its stature. Now there are luxury apartments and condos with floor-to-ceiling windows in modern skyscrapers alongside elegant pre-war buildings and brownstones. All this development has caused prices to rise, and some apartment and condo units here run in the millions of dollars. But unlike other upscale areas in Manhattan, this one isn’t exactly family-friendly. The lack of subways, parks, and schools causes the area to be inhabited mainly by singles and couples.
