Disney's Typhoon Lagoon

Typhoon
Think you've spied Noah's Ark perched on a mountain? Upon closer examination you'll see it's a shrimp boat marooned atop 95-foot-tall Mount Mayday, a geyser-spewing volcano. The hurricane that plopped it there also made wreckage of the tropical resort around it, which residents transformed into a water park-or at least that's the fictional story behind Typhoon Lagoon, launched in 1989 as the "ultimate water park" and still one of the most popular.

Typhoon Lagoon maintains the distinction of having the world's largest inland wave pool. The 2.75-million-gallon pool features 4-foot surfing waves (introduced by a foghorn), as well as smaller, continuous "bobbing" waves. Surfing lessons in the pool are offered for an extra fee before and after regular park hours. Relaxation awaits on the white-sand beach that borders the pool, and small kids can wade in its less-wavy tidal pools. And regardless of the air temperature, the regulated water temperature at Typhoon Lagoon remains consistently tropical.

Now on to the rides: Humunga Kowabunga's enclosed 214-foot slides propel guests almost vertically at 30 mph. In Gang Plank Falls, six people can ride together down waterfalls in a family tube. The Storm Slides offer three different body slides into the same pool. The 2,100-foot Castaway Creek circles the park perimeter for a lazy float. Ketchakidee Creek gives 2- to 5-year-olds their own water playground. And those who seek a unique water-park thrill can snorkel for 15 minutes in Shark Reef, which is populated with thousands of tropical fish and a few sharks.

Typhoon Lagoon is located in the Walt Disney World complex in Lake Buena Vista, about 22 miles southwest of Orlando.
