Enzian Theater

One of Enzian Theater's greatest draws is its selection—not the number of movies it can show at once, mind you; its single screen restricts that. But Central Florida's only full-time, not-for-profit alternative cinema more than compensates for its single screen with the selection of films it presents. In 1989, the theater took the then-risky initiative of showing first-run independent features. The venture has paid off handsomely. The Enzian enjoys strong community support for those independent flicks, along with classic movies and the occasional film festival.

The theater features a 33x14-foot screen, and state-of-the-art Dolby surround sound. But don't expect traditional theater seating at the Enzian: the theater provides plush seating for 250, but at dining tables (accommodating two or four people), rather than rows of seats. And then there are the eats—a far cry from traditional theater concessions. Unobtrusive waiters serve a versatile menu of made-to-order cuisine: baked brie en croute, smoked salmon, quesadillas, chicken pesto pasta, pizzas, salads, sandwiches, and fruit and cheese platters. But if you'd prefer typical movie theater fare, the Enzian also serves hot dogs, popcorn, nachos and cheese, and spicy chicken wings. For dessert, try the brownies, tiramisu, chocolate chip cookies, or cheesecake. Wash it all down with tea, soda, juice, espresso, beer, wine, or bottled water.

Special events hosted at the Enzian include the South Asian Film Festival, the Central Florida Jewish Film Festival, and the Florida Film Festival. On summer weekend mornings, the KidFest program shows such classics as Gulliver's Travels and Born Free for children, with a snack or lunch included in the price.
