Islands of Adventure
Opened in 1999 as a companion to Universal Studios Florida, the 110-acre Islands of Adventure raised Central Florida's bar for theme-park entertainment. Its "islands" are really park subsections-Seuss Landing, Toon Lagoon, Jurassic Park, Marvel Super Hero Island, and the Lost Continent. The high-tech Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man involves 3-D glasses for an action-packed ride between city skyscrapers, with the virtual version of the web-slinger hopping on your car to battle the villain of the day. The park's other signature ride, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, launches riders from zero to 40 mph in two seconds and includes a 360-degree spiral and a 105-feet drop at 60 mph. But the adrenaline rushes don't stop there. Dueling Dragons intertwines two inverted roller coasters, which come within 12 inches of hitting each other three times, at speeds of 55 mph. Feel your heart in your throat with Dr. Doom's Fear Fall, which sends you free-falling from 150 feet. Raptors and a T-Rex try to taste you in the Jurassic Park River Adventure, and splashy turns and dips try to soak you on Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls and on Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges. Even the Cat in the Hat ride will spin you senseless. Tamer attractions include the educational Jurassic Park Discovery Center, "The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad" stadium show, the Caro-Seuss-el merry-go-round, and a multimedia "Poseidon's Fury" show that has you walking through a water vortex. In addition to loads of character-themed trinkets and T-shirts, shops at Islands of Adventure sell the gamut of merchandise, from skateboards to fine jewelry. Eateries offer everything from the Dagwood sandwich and a Wimpy burger to grilled gyros and fresh pastries-and even a green-eggs-and-ham sandwich. Location Hours of operation Cost On-site parking for cars, vans, and motorcycles costs $8 per day or $14 for valet parking. Contact information and reservations
