Orlando Museum of Art

A gallery can sometimes make or break one's appreciation of art. Fortunately, the works within the Orlando Museum of Art have a worthy home. Founded in 1924, the museum ranks as one of the South's best art museums, as judged by Newsweek magazine. And in 1997, the already spacious museum underwent a $7 million expansion.

Works in the museum's American, ancient American, and African collections include paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, photographs, artifacts, intricate beadwork, and pottery. Featured art works are by artists John Singer Sargent, Thomas Moran, George Inness, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Suzanne McClelland, Robert Rauschenberg, Pat Steir, Morris Louis, John Chamberlain, and Dennis Oppenheim. Year-round traveling exhibits range from ancient art to local modern art, including some pieces available for purchase.

The Orlando Museum of Art positions itself as appealing and relevant through such events as hip musical mixers, wine tastings, antique shows, lectures, and workshops for adults and youth. Most notable are the annual Festival of Trees tradition, where decorated holiday trees, wreaths, and gingerbread houses dazzle spectators; and the monthly "1st Thursdays" evenings, where guests party to live music, enjoy refreshments, and view themed local art.
