Old Town

Old Town
If you're anticipating that Old Town is an authentically re-created village, you have the wrong place. Despite what its name might imply, Old Town is a hybrid of shopping, dining, and entertainment venues. So what's old about Old Town? "Old-fashioned" is a better word to describe its '50s dance music, general store with candy bins and 25-cent bottled Pepsi-Cola, pulled taffy, brick-lined streets, Ferris wheel, merry-go-round, and vintage-car cruising.

More than 75 venues of every type-including some that are not so old-fashioned-vie for consumer dollars. Among them are a surf shop, a haunted house, a tattoo studio, a psychic, a British-goods store, a magic supplies shop, a studio for faux vintage portraits, and a year-round Christmas store. And as you might expect, there are shops that sell jewelry, apparel, electronics, collectibles, and specialty items.

Eating options include having a burger and fries at the A&W, fried chicken at the Cadillac Diner, teriyaki chicken and rice at Spring Roll Chinese Restaurant, and prime rib at Damon's Grill. Adults can wet their whistles at a coffee shop and a tavern. For the kids, fun includes laser tag, bumper cars, a go-kart track, a space simulator, arcade games, and a roller coaster with bankings that turn 80 degrees. The smallest tykes can enjoy relatively tame rides, while big kids might want to brave the Old Town Slingshot, which secures riders to bungee cords and shoots them outwards 365 feet.

Weekend nights at Old Town belong to the "cruisers." Every Friday, cars such as Mustangs, Corvettes, and Monte Carlos show up for the 9 p.m. parade. On Saturdays, an average of 325 classic cars, hot rods, street rods, and antiques roll into Old Town beginning at 1 p.m., with the 30-minute cruise parade starting at 8:30 p.m. Both nights feature live rock music from the 1950s and 1960s, starting at about 7 p.m.
