Think opera requires a large, bellowing lady in a horned helmet? Can't
tell an intermezzo from a libretto? No matter how green you are to
opera, the Orlando Opera makes this art form accessible and understandable
through
its affordable pricing, relaxed dress code, and English translations.
What this company hasn't modified is the excitement opera offersspectacular
costumes
and scenery, a live chorus and orchestra, engrossing story lines, and
voices mighty enough to reach all 2,500 seats without amplification.
Serving Central Florida since 1958, Orlando Opera has filled leading roles with such renowned vocalists as Placido Domingo, Beverly Sills, Luciano Pavarotti, Richard Tucker, Jessye Norman, Cecilia Bartoli, Jerry Hadley, Carol Vaness, and Denyce Graves. Yet even without such headlining guests, the opera company's professional singers draw tens of thousands annually. Productions have ranged from Mozart's comical The
Marriage of Figaro to Bizet's tragic Carmen. Holiday programs and special events add to each season's offerings.
In the lobby, before performances and during intermissions, the Orlando Opera Shop sells such items as opera glasses, silk scarves, jewelry, posters, notecards, books, and CDs. The shop also is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Orlando Opera offices.

Main stage performances take place at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center, located at 401 West Livingston Street in downtown Orlando. Orlando Opera's offices are in the Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts at 1111 North Orange Avenue, also in downtown Orlando.
