Richard Petty Driving Experience

Richard Petty Driving Experience
With a shrill scream, you find yourself hurtling in circles at terrifying speeds. Nightmare? More like a dream come true-if it's the Richard Petty Driving Experience (RPDE). As a seven-time winner of the Winston Cup, Petty retired in 1992, but NASCAR's "king" has yet to put his love of racing out to pasture. In fact, he's sharing it with amateur speed demons through RPDE.

Adopting Petty's name in 1994, the enterprise allows the public to drive or ride in a 600-horsepower Winston Cup-style stock car at famed racing facilities. In 1997, RPDE became available at the Walt Disney World Speedway, a mile-long, tri-oval track with banking of 7 to 10 degrees.

The Disney RPDE offers four programs. In the Ride-Along program, you ride shotgun in a two-seat stock car as a qualified instructor drives at 145 mph. As part of the three-hour Rookie Experience, you steer and accelerate for eight laps around the track. The King's Experience lets you burn rubber for 18 laps as part of the five-hour program. And the Experience of a Lifetime gives extreme thrill-seekers three 10-lap solo sessions on the track.

In each program the participants learn the do's and don'ts of track protocol from a professional driving instructor. Those who drive can go at their own speed, following a pace car.
