Florida Splendid China

Tour the People's Republic of China extensively and you'll cover 3.7 million square miles inhabited by over 1 billion people. Tour the 76-acre Florida Splendid China and you'll hit the country's highlights in just one day, and without the typical theme-park crowds.

Patterned after the popular Splendid China in Shenzhen, Florida Splendid China debuted in 1993 to accusations of propaganda by some human-rights organizations. Nonetheless, the refreshingly different theme park offers history, culture, and replicas of 60 of China's famed landmarks. Visitors can see detailed miniatures of the 4,200-mile Great Wall of China (shrunken to a half mile), the Forbidden City, the 8,000 Terra Cotta Warriors, the Stone Forest of Yunnan, the Imperial Palace, the Temple of Heaven pagoda, the Dalai Lama's Potala Palace in Tibet, and the giant Leshan Buddha statue from Sichuan. Each miniature scene includes a recorded introduction, and more than 10,000 figurines dot the scenes to give a sense of the models' scale.

But Splendid China is more than an outdoor museum. The Magical Snow Tiger Adventure spotlights the striped big cat, along with snakes, tarantulas, a lion, and a Florida panther. You will hear traditional melodies on ancient stringed instruments in two daily shows, and witness an exhibition of Chinese folk dancing and costumes. For an extra fee, you can attend the 90-minute "Mysterious Kingdom of the Orient" performance, which features more than 50 acrobats, dancers, and entertainers.

In the park's Suzhou Gardens, shops sell genuine Chinese collectibles, jewelry, and apparel, and restaurant chefs from various Chinese regions serve authentic dishes.
