Downtown Orlando Cosmopolitan and trendy yet filled with old-world charm, downtown Orlando is quite possibly the most overlooked area in Central Floridathose who come here for the theme parks often miss this spot. The residential neighborhoods here have well-maintained older homes situated on tree-lined streets, the historic area striking a balance with the modern high-rise apartment buildings and urban townhouses. Downtown has a number of parks with recreation and picnic areas, bike paths, and playgrounds. Lake Eola Park, situated on over 43 acres right in the heart of Downtown, is the site of many special events throughout the year, including arts and crafts shows, musical events, and the University of Central Florida's Shakespeare Festival. Downtown Orlando's Farmer's Market, open every Saturday from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m., is a great place to shop for baked goods, fresh produce, plants, and crafts. Church Street Station features a collection of specialty shops and restaurants. The complex was constructed around Orlando's original train station.
