Neighborhoods
of Philadelphia…well that’s not an easy topic. In fact, for many
it’s an argument as soon as you open your mouth. If you ask ten native
Philadelphians to list the neighborhoods of the city, there is no question
you will get ten different answers. That’s probably because there is
no definitive list, but according to the Philadelphia Planning Commission,
there are no fewer than 111 distinct neighborhoods within the 129 square miles
of the city limits. Wow! That’s got to get pretty confusing. So for
sanity’s sake, we are going to stick with the major neighborhoods, that
most would agree, make up Philly.
Philadelphia is easily one of the most compact and walkable major cities
in the United States, much like it was back in 1776. With the city’s
diverse neighborhoods there is something around every corner to catch your
interest and keep your mind off your tired feet. You can just keep walking,
block after block, and watch the city come alive. This is a city that is truly
defined by its neighborhoods, from tiny Rittenhouse Square to brawny South
Philly (home of soft pretzels and mustard); to Rocky Balboa’s home of
Kensington in North Philly, to the Ivy League environs of the University of
Pennsylvania. And although they may argue about how many are on the list,
Philadelphians are loyal to their neighborhoods. Ask a native where he or
she is from and the response will likely be: Fairmount, Fishtown, or Frankford,
rather than Philadelphia.
