The Cannery

Once home to the largest fruit and vegetable cannery in the world, the Cannery now is one of San Francisco's most popular attractions. During its heyday, the California Fruit Packers Association, eventually known as Del Monte, employed 2,500 people and produced 200,000 hand-soldered cans per day. It ceased operations in 1937, a result of depression-era economics, and the Cannery building subsequently was used as a warehouse by various companies.

In the 1960s the Cannery was scheduled for demolition but instead was given its second life, and today the old brick warehouse is a waterfront marketplace that features unique shops, restaurants, live entertainment, and a comedy club. There are three levels of winding walkways, balconies, and bridges surrounding a courtyard with several outdoor cafés. The Cannery also offers a variety of hands-on activities for children, as well as special events throughout the year. The wide variety of restaurants, shops, and special events featured at the Cannery means there's something for everyone.

Location
The Cannery is located at 2801 Leavenworth Street at the foot of Columbus Street, overlooking San Francisco Bay. Driving directions and information on public transportation can be found at the Cannery Web site.
