The Exploratorium Founded in 1969 by noted physicist and educator Dr. Frank Oppenheimer, the Exploratorium is known as the first and foremost of the world's interactive museums. The museum has over 650 exhibits that focus on human perception and encourage exploration of how we see, hear, smell, feel, and otherwise experience the world around us. The three-dimensional, hands-on exhibits cover a range of subject areas, including science, nature, art, and technology. The Exploratorium prides itself on being a leader in the movement to promote museums as educational centers. In addition to its many exhibits, the Exploratorium's regular schedule includes live theater, films, and special events, such as the visual and performing artists who create works onsite at the museum. Location Hours of operation Winter hours (Labor Day to Memorial Day) are from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and on Wednesdays until 9 p.m. The Exploratorium is closed on Mondays (except most holidays), Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
