San Francisco Maritime Museum

Inside a ship-shaped structure on San Francisco Bay you'll find the Maritime Museum, part of the Maritime National Historic Park. A monument to San Francisco's seagoing past, the museum features interactive exhibits, ship models, maritime paintings, ships' figureheads, photos, and authentic artifacts. Painted murals from the 1930s depict the mythical lost continents of Mu and Atlantis. Second-floor displays include photomurals of the early years on the San Francisco waterfront, along with a collection of scrimshaw and whaling guns.

The Steamship Room highlights the technological evolution of ships. Climb to the third floor of the ship for "Sparks, Waves and Wizards: Communications at Sea," an interactive exhibit that details the history of maritime communication, from hand-held semaphore to orbiting satellite. The view from the museum's top floor offers a great look at San Francisco Bay.

The Maritime Museum is located at 900 Beach Street at the west end of Fisherman's Wharf. Traveling to the museum via public transportation is encouraged.
