Steinhart Aquarium

Want to get up close and personal with marine life? The Steinhart Aquarium gives you that opportunity, with its nearly 600 different species of fishes, large invertebrates, reptiles, and amphibians. Watch the colony of black-footed penguins through the "penguin cam." Shake hands with a sea star and other friendly creatures in the touch tide pool. Learn about the exotic creatures —alligators, poison dart frogs, and Burmese pythons—that live in the aquarium's swamp. And view the 50 species of living coral in the 6,000-gallon coral reef tank.

The Steinhart Aquarium, one of three museums within the California Academy of Sciences, features 165 individual tanks and more than 6,000 sea creatures. Steinhart's "fish roundabout," a massive circular tank that holds 100,000 gallons of water, allows you full viewing of its inhabitants through 36 large windows.

Location
The Academy of Sciences building, home to the Steinhart Aquarium, is at 55 Concourse Drive in Golden Gate Park. Most parking is free within Golden Gate Park, but spaces are limited. Use of alternative forms of transportation is encouraged. Maps of the Academy area can be found at their Web site.

Hours of operation
The aquarium is open daily, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with extended summer hours (Memorial Day to Labor Day) from 9 a.m until 6 p.m.

Admission
Adults $8.50
Seniors $5.50
Students (ages 12-17) $5.50
Children (ages 4-11) $2.00

Admission is free on the first Wednesday of each month. Children 3 years old and younger are admitted free every day.

This attraction participates in the CityPass discount program, which provides access to five popular San Francisco attractions and a seven-day "Muni passport," valid on Muni vehicles, including cable cars. Cost is $34.84 (adults) and $25.74 (children, ages 3-17). CityPass booklets can be purchased at participating attraction locations or at the CityPass Web site.

Contact information
For more information, call (415) 750-7145. The TDD phone number for the hearing impaired is (415) 386-9440.

Disabled access
A limited number of wheelchairs are available for use without charge at the main entrance.

Special considerations

  • Daily feeding times for the penguins are 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is a great time to visit, as the penguins are particularly lively at feeding times.
  • Daily feeding time in the fish roundabout is 1:30 pm.
  • Food service is available in the Academy Café, located on the lower level, but don't plan on grabbing a hamburger or a pizza at the end of your day. The Café closes at 4 p.m., which is an hour or two earlier than the aquarium.

Additional information
Visit the Steinhart Aquarium Web site.

Please note
Cost, hours of operation, or other information about this attraction is subject to change without notice. We suggest you confirm with the attraction prior to your visit.
