Steinhart Aquarium Want to get up close and personal with marine life? The Steinhart Aquarium gives you that opportunity, with its nearly 600 different species of fishes, large invertebrates, reptiles, and amphibians. Watch the colony of black-footed penguins through the "penguin cam." Shake hands with a sea star and other friendly creatures in the touch tide pool. Learn about the exotic creatures alligators, poison dart frogs, and Burmese pythonsthat live in the aquarium's swamp. And view the 50 species of living coral in the 6,000-gallon coral reef tank. The Steinhart Aquarium, one of three museums within the California Academy of Sciences, features 165 individual tanks and more than 6,000 sea creatures. Steinhart's "fish roundabout," a massive circular tank that holds 100,000 gallons of water, allows you full viewing of its inhabitants through 36 large windows. Location Hours of operation Admission
Admission is free on the first Wednesday of each month. Children 3 years old and younger are admitted free every day. This attraction participates in the CityPass discount program, which provides access to five popular San Francisco attractions and a seven-day "Muni passport," valid on Muni vehicles, including cable cars.
